A research consortium including scientists from Slovakia, Czech Republic has designed a convenient device for evaluating river water quality. Their mobile dynamic passive sampling device can be attached to a cruising ship. It is capable of reproducible and sensitive detection of trace organic compounds, as demonstrated for the river Danube. Along a total distance of >2000km, between Passau (GER) and Tulcea (RO), chemical analysis and bioanalytic/toxicity assessment revealed major differences in pollutant type and concentration in eight pre-defined river stretches. Among over 150 chemicals found, prominent ones include diverse pharmaceuticals as well as triisobutylphosphate, a strong solvent used for liquefying concrete, textile auxiliaries and paper coating compounds; and naphtalen, attributable to solvent-/synthetics-producing industries.
The device could prove useful to monitor water quality improvements that potentially arise from ecoinnovative alternatives replacing non-eco production processes.
