|Background||Budapest Airport has been developing its environmental performanc for years, where protection of groundwater and surface water is a key issue.
Airports are suitable for rainwater harvesting at a larger scale, because they have institutional and infrastructural advantages compared with cities.
|Description of challenge to be solved||Separate sanitary sewer systems have been built at the airport. Rainwater from the vicinity of Terminal 1 flows, via a gravity drainage system, into the water reservoir lake located at the airport, and is then pumped, via a pressurized sewer, into the gravity water drainage system operating at Terminal 2. From there, rainwater is channelled via a gravity conduit into canal number 171 and 17. Canal 17 flows into the Maglódi canal, which in turn is a tributary of the Gyáli creek. The problem recently is that the rainwater collected during winter time can contain differents pollutants from deicing acivities, namely urea and glycol.|
